Flying Mutant Zombie Rats by Kat De Falla

I first met Kat at the Badger State Author event last August. I had been a brand new blogger, it was my first book event, and Kat was one the first authors I approached with my lil business cards and timidly told her about my blog. She totally gave me a signed copy of her book, First Contact, and we talked for awhile. After the event I reviewed her book and from there we kept in touch. Last fall she messaged me and invited me to become the Official Blogger for Madtown Author Daze! I was completely floored! This author was giving my little blog a chance at reviewing for her event! Now the event is just around the corner and I am SO excited to be a part of it 🙂 So thank you Kat for being awesome!

Book Description

Summer vacation is almost here! And Pea O’Neil is stoked to try out the new local BMX track which is finally open. He and his gang of friends can ride all summer long!

But when Pea tries a back flip, he unwittingly opens a portal to another dimension and hordes of flying mutant zombie rats are unleashed upon the city. With the help of an otherworldly talking cat sent to help prevent the demise of humankind, Pea and his friends must hunt down the hungry mutants and send them back before the portal closes.

But when the zombie rats attack a neighbor man, the boys have to enlist the help of a graveyard looney and the city’s stray cats. With time running out, Pea and his gang track the monsters to the city’s sewer system. But in the city sewer of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, it’s eat…or get eaten.

My Review

This was a great kids book! It totally reminded me of when I would read Goosebumps as a kid. It was a quick and easy read and would be great for middle school aged kids! (And I’m a big kid at heart, so I loved it 😉

The characters were fantastic. Pea and his friends Paco, Tad, Thad, and Jules were just awesome. I loved that Paco and Pea had each others backs all the time, and the whole crew of kids stood up for their friends and stood up to bullies. They would protect other kids they saw get picked on and I thought this was great. Another thing I thought was awesome is the fact that their idol was a girl named Maddie (aka Moto Maddie). The BMX park that was just opening was named after her and they idolized her and how she became a BMX legend in their town. I just found that really cool.

The whole storyline of the crazy flying mutant zombie rats was just quirky and fun. Especially when the cat Max showed up. Even though I’m an adult now, it took me back to when I was a kid and would read Goosebumps everyday and loved reading stuff like this. The climax was great, and the friendship between Paco and Pea really stood out to me during that end scene. The only thing I felt was lacking was the ending. It ended too quickly and I wish we had gotten to see a little bit more.

All in all this was a great kids book and I would definitely recommend it if you had a little girl or boy that loves crazy adventure stories!

So I don’t have any kids, bit my kitties are my children 🙂 Gizmo is my blog mascot and also a momma’s boy, so he snuggled up with me to read Bedtime. He fully enjoyed himself!

Book Description

Now if you are a grandma, or even if you re not, there are things we should remember and these things mean a lot! Every child is a wonder, every child is a gift. Each one needs care and kindness, every child needs a lift! Bedtime should be loving, bedtime should be sweet. Evenings end with songs and stories, make every child s day complete.

My Review

This is a wonderful children’s book. The illustrations are adorable, and the story is sweet. It’s the perfect bedtime story for someone to read to their little one. One thing I thought was great was not only is it a sweet story, but it’s also interactive. On each page of the book there are “Grandma Hearts” to find. They are little plaid hearts hidden in the illustrations. There’s also a song sheet at the back of the book for the “Grandma Hearts Bedtime Song.”

I highly recommend this one for anyone that has little ones that they love to read bedtime stories to 🙂

Book Description

Cassie Jordan has been lied to, cheated on, and passed over at her job. Married to a wealthy womanizer, Cassie finds out he has been cheating on her. After her divorce, Cassie decides the wealthy can’t be trusted and vows never to fall for a rich man or anyone she catches lying to her.

Hogan Winters is part owner of a family business and has the kind of money Cassie despises. He’s tired of women coming on to him because he’s rich. He decides to never tell a woman about his financial status until she gets to know him as a person. As an undercover FBI agent, he uses his knowledge of antiquities to find the people who are bringing stolen WWII artifacts into the country. Unfortunately, the woman he’s falling for is in the crosshairs of the FBI.

Can they work through their preconceived notions and find true love?

My Review

Never With a Rich Man was a great read. The first 1/4 of the book was a little slow to start for me, but after that it picked up and I was hooked. I loved the characters that Tina Susedik created, and the storyline was interesting and pulled me in.

Cassie and Hogan had a unique relationship. Their meet cute was hilarious and awkward to say the least, but you knew they had that spark. When Hogan realizes that she is the one he is supposed to be investigating for the FBI, he must decide what is more important, the new relationship with Cassie or doing what his boss tells him to and getting intel about her and her involvement with their case. Cassie knows that she has feelings for Hogan, but she can’t bring herself to believe that he would ever want a woman like her after everything that happened with her ex husband. Will Cassie be able to let Hogan in, and what will happen when Cassie finds out the secrets that Hogan has been hiding? You’ll have to read to find out 😉

All in all I really enjoyed this. I loved Hogan and Cassie’s relationship and you could feel the emotions flowing through the pages. Some parts were a little slow while other parts seemed to fly a little too quickly (the ending felt a little rushed and I wish there was a little more to the meeting between Cassie and Hogan at the very end), but overall the story sucked me in and I loved it. If you love suspense and romance this one is for you 🙂

Tina always had stories running her mind while growing up, but didn’t start writing them down until she and her husband made one of their many moves, and she didn’t have a job. Her first story, a children’s story, started her love of writing.

While she has seven non-fiction history books in print, “Riding for Love” is her first published romance with Soul Mate Publishing.

When not writing, Tina enjoys spending time with her five grandchildren, reading, hiking, biking, camping, canoeing, and bird watching. The theme here is anything outdoors. Her favorite place to write is even outdoors, which is difficult in the long, cold, Wisconsin winters.

Goodbye Paradise by Sarina Bowen

First off, Sarina Bowen is one of my all time favorite authors! Her Ivy Years series, and True North series is amazing, and the books she wrote with Elle Kennedy, Him and Us and WAG’s have been amazing! I am thankful I’ve been on her ARC team since last year when she first released Bittersweet. Her character Zach from Keepsake (True North #3) is probably my favorite main male character I have read. Her stories and characters are unique and absolutely addicting!

Goodbye Paradise was originally released under the title In Front of God and Everyone under Sarina Bowen’s other pen name Nealy Wagner. She is now re-releasing Goodbye Paradise and Hello Forever as Sarina Bowen. I cannot tell you how excited I was when I found out about these books. I never knew about them when they were originally released, so I am so happy she decided to release them again under her name.

Book Description

Most people called it a cult. But for twenty years, Josh and Caleb called it home.

In Paradise, there is no television. No fast food. Just long hours of farm work and prayer on a dusty Wyoming ranch, and nights in a crowded bunkhouse. The boys of the Compound are kept far from the sinners’ world.

But Joshua doesn’t need temptation to sin. His whole life, he’s wanted his best friend, Caleb. By day they work side by side. Only when Josh closes his eyes at night can they be together the way he craves.

It can never be. And his survival depends on keeping his terrible desires secret.

Caleb has always protected Josh against the worst of the bullying at the Compound. But he has secrets of his own, and a plan to get away — until it all backfires.

Josh finds himself homeless in a world that doesn’t want him. Can Caleb find him in time? And will they find a place of safety, where he can admit to Josh how he really feels?

My Review

This book was absolutely amazing! I fell so hard for these characters and this story.

Sarina Bowen creates so much emotion in her stories. You just develop this deep connection to the characters that she writes and you become emotionally invested in them. When they are happy, you are happy, when they are devastated, so are you. When one of them does something stupid, you want to reach through the pages and smack them upside the head. There were 2 scenes that stuck out to me the most that really showed so much emotion and really connected me to the story. The first was at the bus stop at the beginning of the story. You could just feel the emotions flowing off the page and how heartbreaking it was for Caleb when he found Josh. The second was about 3/4 of the way through when Josh and Caleb were going through a hard time and were fighting. The emotions flying from Josh just felt so real. It’s always the hardships and how the characters get through them that really draws me in, and Sarina Bowen is a master at sucking you into her stories.

I don’t want to give too much away, because you just need to experience this book for yourself. I will say all of the secondary characters were really great. Also just an interesting fact, the cult that Josh and Caleb come from is the same cult that Zach (a character from the True North series) came from, and Zach is even mentioned in this book once.

I highly recommend this book! You won’t be disappointed!

Irish charmer Kieran Doherty has been a fighter at Driscoll’s Gym for most of his life. He’s been content to let his best friend take the spotlight, now it’s his turn to make a name for himself in the world of heavy weight champions. Falling in love is the one thing he vowed never to do, but meeting Marie changed everything.

It’s easy to imagine a happy-ever-after when the sun is shining. But when the storm comes, and all hope seems lost, they both learn that if you want something badly enough, you have to be willing to fight for it.

My Review

I’ve been waiting over a year for the next installment of this series, and let me tell you, the wait was well worth it because this book was amazing! The characters that R. J. Prescott creates in this series are some of my favorites, and I can’t wait for more from her in the future!

The Storm follows the story of Kieran, who is Con’s best friend. We know that in the previous books there was a spark between him and Marie, and now we get to see the fire erupt! Let me tell you, this story was amazing! Marie tries to keep Kieran at arms length because of a secret she hides, but that won’t stop our boy from pulling out all the stops and trying to steal her heart. I’ve gotta say, one of my favorite scenes was at the club when Kieran gets the guys to help him with something for Marie. It was a totally cheesy romantic moment but it was so freaking adorable and I loved it! I also love how Marie gets her nickname, Irish. Their whole relationship is really sweet. Also I loved all of the fight scenes. R. J. Prescott does an amazingly detailed job on fight choreography throughout the book and I can see it playing out in my head like a movie.

Now onto one of my other favorite things about R. J. Prescott’s books……. her characters! The characters in this series are so real. They have detailed back stories, and you can feel such a connection to them. The guys have a brotherhood, where everyone has each others backs no matter what. The entire side plot with Liam was amazing, (and yes….. we get to find out who his secret guy is…….. FINALLY! I’ve been waiting so long to get that info!) Danny is one of my favorites, he’s a grumpy old man but has a heart of gold. The banter between him and the guys is hilarious and always gets a laugh out of me. And Tommy………. oh Tommy……. I hope we don’t have to wait a whole other year to get his story, because I want it like yesterday! 😉 I just love all of these big crazy Irish fighters.

This series is fantastic and I highly recommend you read it. You’ll fall in love with these characters and their stories. Can’t wait for the next one!

The Aftermath by R. J. Prescott

The Aftermath is the continuation of the story from The Hurricane and continues Em and Con’s story. The last time I read this book was over a year ago, and I forgot how much I loved these characters. R. J. Prescott creates such an amazing story with characters that come right off the page.

Book Description

When you’ve got nothing, you’ve got nothing to lose. But what happens when you have everything you ever wanted? You fight to keep it.

Cormac “the Hurricane” O’Connell’s star is on the rise. Billed as the most promising young boxer of his generation, his new career is taking him to places he never dreamed. But O’Connell only needs one thing in life: his wife. In her final year of college, Em cannot follow him around the world but together they make it work.

Just when everything they ever wanted is on the horizon, the past resurfaces to haunt them and O’Connell realizes that justice might not be a part of his happy ever after.

He couldn’t protect Em once before, but in the aftermath of the hurricane, he will make sure that never happens again.

My Review

I fell in love with Em and Con in the first book, and the second book didn’t disappoint.

I really love the brotherly love between all the guys. Let me tell you, there was one point in the book where I could not stop laughing, and all I will say is it’s during the paintball scene. That scene was priceless. We also get a mystery surrounding Liam and I’d really like to see him in more of the books to see how his story plays out. Hopefully R. J. Prescott will be coming out with stories for all the rest of the guys now, because I want more!!!! We also get introduced to a new character named Heath, who becomes O’Connells new manager.

This book had a lot of darker tones to it, and was just an emotional roller coaster. It didn’t have as many horrible flash backs like the first book, but Emily goes through so much emotional torment because of her step father, and Con is ripped apart because he doesn’t know what to do for her. There were a few moments where I had to stop reading for a few minutes because I was so worried about what was going to happen next and I didn’t know if I wanted to know or not (of course I did, but the feels!!!! Ugh….. So many feels)

Again, like the first book, the fight scenes were amazing and so well thought out! You could tell the author really researched and thought out the scenes and choreography during the fights.

This was a great book and I loved how it ended. I can’t wait until she writes more books in this series. I really want to know about Liam and Kieran. So please R. J. write one of their stories next! 😉

Reclaiming His Life by K. L. Myers

Reclaiming His Life Banner

I found K. L. Myers through The Hype PR when Reawakening His Heart released and I signed up to review it. I absolutely fell in love with those characters and have been looking forward to reading her second book Reclaiming His Life about Braedyn’s brother Gauge.

Book Description

The seven letters that sum up my existence.

I thought I was indestructible, a Badass of the highest level, but reality knocked me down a peg, more like a thousand pegs.

Now, here I am years later trying to put my life together again.

I’ve been given a fresh start and what I do with it is all on me.

RHL Teaser 2

My Review

I knew going into this book that Gauge would be an unique character with a dark past. I was excited to hear what his backstory was and how he landed himself in jail when we hear about him in the first book, Reawakening His Heart.

I don’t want to say too much about his story, because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say his career and then what landed him in jail was really interesting. When he gets out, he becomes a bouncer at a strip club where he meets Lex. When the FBI comes looking for her, he has to decide if he’s up to protecting her from the people out to get her.

In all honesty, this book wasn’t my cup of tea. I did like some aspects of the book, but there was a lot that I didn’t like. One thing that really put me off was the relationship between Gauge and Lex. When he first meets her, she’s pretty much his fuck buddy. She’s not even mentioned until the FBI shows up, and you find out he’s known her for a few weeks already. To me, it just felt like she wasn’t important enough for him to mention until she’s “in danger”. The connection to the characters just wasn’t there for me, and so I wasn’t really invested in their relationship emotionally. One other major thing I didn’t enjoy was there were too many sex scenes. Normally 4-5 is a good number for me if they are placed right and flow with the story. This one had at least 6 that I can remember and a lot more that I skimmed through. The previous book had a lot as well, but because I connected to those characters more than I did these it just didn’t work for me. Also just a warning, there is kink and bondage in this book, as well as multiple partner sex.

All in all I would recommend this book to some people, but not all. It all depends on your taste in books. I did enjoy parts of the book, and liked the back story of the characters, and I absolutely loved the ending and epilogue. The writings style was great and I can’t wait to read more from K. L. Myers. The next story is going to be about Jaxon, and I am definitely looking forward to hear what happens to him and his family! (Something happens to them in this book and we will have to see how it turns out in the next book!)
