Goodreads Book Description
“Aleena Moore is content with her life. She has goals and dreams and an easy smile. She also has a secret she holds locked inside.
Jared Holt believes he doesn’t deserve to love or be loved. He destroys everything he touches. Haunted by the mistake that shattered his life, he’s fled from the memory of that pain.
Jared doesn’t know why he’s compelled to return, but finds himself drawn back to the place where it all began. The exact place where it ended. When he runs into his childhood best friend, Aleena’s older brother Christopher, he agrees to share Christopher and Aleena’s apartment while he looks for a place of his own.
Aleena is no longer the little girl Jared remembers from his past and evokes feelings in him he never wanted to feel again. Terrified of destroying her, he fights to keep her away. But her touch is something he can’t resist—the touch that sealed his fate.
Their pasts are intertwined and their futures uncertain. The only truths they know are the secrets they whisper in the night.”
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters and the plot. There were lots of emotions in play throughout the book, and it was definitely a page turner.
Jared is a character that originally started out as a good guy when he was a kid, and because of guilt over things that happened in the past, he doesn’t believe he deserves a good life or happiness. He thinks anything he cares about turns to destruction. His back story was very emotional and the way A. L. Jackson writes it really drew you to the character. When he was younger he went to juvie for drugs and then fled to NJ once he got out. Now he is returning to his hometown to face his past.
Aleena is the little sister to Jareds best friend when they were growing up. She always had an attraction to him, but never admitted to it until later on after Jared had left town when they were kids. when she sees Jared again after 6 years, those old feelings get stirred up again.
When Christopher (Jareds best friend) sees him at a bar one night after not knowing what happened to him for the past 6 years he invites him to stay at his place until he finds a place of his own. Jared sees Aleena and is drawn to her, even though he doesn’t want to be. After a little while he stops trying to fight his feelings for Aleena and they start a relationship, keeping it a secret from Aleena’s family.
As the story develops we find out exactly what happened in Jareds past to make him feel like he doesn’t deserve to be happy or to love someone. It’s a really tragic accident that rips Jareds family apart and drives Jared to become addicted to drugs and land himself in juvie. Jared doesn’t want to face his past, but Aleena tries to make him understand that it wasn’t his fault and that he deserves to be happy. This causes him to run away from her so he wouldn’t have to face his past.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, and made me want to know what happens next.
