The Perfect Game series by J. Sterling

The perfect game series

This is another series by J. Sterling. There are 4 books total. Book 1-3 are about Cassie and Jacks story. Book 4 The Other Game is a retelling of the first book but through Dean Carters POV. This one’s gonna be a long one……. I loathed this book and I decided to make this a funny rant review instead of just a normal review, so if you plan to ever read this book and you don’t want spoilers, don’t read this. If you don’t care if you see spoilers or you just want to be entertained by my crazy ranting…. than this one’s for you 🙂

Goodreads Book Description

*I’m only including the description of the first book The Perfect Game so there’s not so much to read through. I will however put a link to each book down in the book link area.

“He’s a game she never intended to play.
And she’s the game changer he never knew he needed.

The Perfect Game tells the story of college juniors, Cassie Andrews & Jack Carter. When Cassie meets rising baseball hopeful Jack, she is determined to steer clear of him and his typical cocky attitude. But Jack has other things on his mind… like getting Cassie to give him the time of day.

They’re both damaged, filled with mistrust and guarded before they find one another (and themselves) in this emotional journey about love and forgiveness. Strap yourselves for a ride that will not only break your heart, but put it back together.

Sometimes life gets ugly before it gets beautiful…”

My Review

I REALLY tried to like this book. I started out loving it, and then it just crashed and burned halfway through the first book. Being the crazy person I am, I hate leaving a series unfinished so I had to read the series through to the end. However, I’m going to have a little fun with this review so…….

WARNING THERE WILL BE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!! You have been warned 😉

The Perfect Game: Book 1: SO this book started out great. I really liked Cassie and how she made Jack chase after her. I liked Jacks humor and personality. This was the start of a great relationship. I LOVED Dean (Jacks little brother).

Jack is a star pitcher for Fullton State University. He’s a big man on campus, all the ladies want him, and he’s a top pick for the draft to become a major league ball player one day. Cassie is a photographer  just starting at Fullton State after being at community college for the past 2 years. When Cassie goes to her first party of the year she meets Jack. She knows he’s a player and doesn’t want anything to do with him. Jack can’t believe there is a girl that won’t fall for his charms and he is intrigued. He starts to bump into her on campus so he can talk to her. When she still won’t give him the time of day he convinces her to go on a date with him and he will leave her alone if she doesn’t have a good time. She reluctantly agrees. Their first date and courtship was pretty cute, and I enjoyed their banter back and forth.

When it comes time for the draft, Jack gets chosen to play for the Diamondbacks and starts off on their AAA team. He leaves right away and they have to deal with a long distance relationship.

THIS is where it all went south for me! When he gets moved to the next team up in Alabama, Jack throws a perfect game. To celebrate the team goes out for drinks at a local bar. (This whole scene is played out in Jacks POV by the way) Jack runs into this girl named Krystal that is fawning all over him. He says he’s not interested but she keeps coming onto him. He gets SO wasted that eventually he just gives in and goes to her and says yes and sleeps with her. Then when he realizes what he did the next morning he kicks her out of his house.

WHAT THE EVER LOVING CRAP?!?!?!?!?!?!?! NO! JUST NO!!!!!! I’m sorry, I don’t give a shit if you are piss drunk, you can still keep your dick in your pants! NO EXCUSES!!!!! GAH This just pissed me off so freaking much I almost threw my iPad across the room!

Then he never tells Cassie. One of her rules is trust, and he doesn’t want to lose “the love of his life” so he decides not to tell her, UNTIL HE FINDS OUT HE GOT KRYSTAL PREGNANT BECAUSE HIS DUMB ASS DIDN’T USE A CONDOM! (And he tells her this a few weeks after he did the deed)

THEN he decides he’s going to go marry Krystal because he doesn’t want to abandon his kid BEFORE HE EVEN KNOWS HE’S THE FATHER! (keep in mind, the way this character was written you know she’s looking to trap a star athlete) When Cassie finds out, she is devastated but when it comes to the week he’s going to get married she still loves him and tries to stop the wedding. NOPE…… he leaves her crying in the parking lot at the stadium and goes and gets married anyways even though every single person in his life tells him not to.

A little while after the wedding he finally figures out KRYSTAL FAKED THE PREGNANCY!!!!!! Well duh you freaking moron!!!!!! He kicks her out and then tries to get an annulment. Krystal won’t sign the papers…… blah blah blah….. drama drama drama……. wah wah wah……. This was just torture!

So you would think now he’d go to Cassie and beg for forgiveness. NOPE…… he has to wait until all the paperwork is settled with Krystal before he even TALKS to her. Not a text, no call, nothing!

The other thing that royally pissed me off about this book was how everything came back on Cassie. Cassie apologized to HIM half the time and people were more worried about how the drama will affect Jacks Baseball career than anything else. He cheated, yet she ends up apologizing????? WTF?????

The ONLY thing that had any saving grace to this book in the end was how he finally came grovelling back to her. That was a cute scene and saved the ending at least.

The Game Changer: Book 2: SPOILERS!!!!!!!! Pretty much the entire first half of this book was a flash back to what happened during the 6 months  before Jack came back to grovel and what he went through with Krystal. It was annoying….. it was boring…… and we could have completely just ended the series with book 1.

Jack is in the Major Leagues now playing for the New York Mets. Cassie works for a magazine company as a photographer.

The one thing that pissed me off in this book was near the end Cassie can’t take the stress of stuff that is happening at that moment and leaves to fly back home to LA. A guy tries to kiss her and she pushes him away (he’s the guy employed by Jack to be her guard at ball games because people are mean to her and Jack has to go all caveman to protect her). When Jack finds out he flips his shit! He says he can’t trust her and blah blah blah and throws out things she said to him when he CHEATED on her right back in her face for a KISS that she didn’t even initiate!!!!!!! Can I just take a chair and smack Jack across the face with it now? Because I just want to beat his ass! (Yeah…. I almost threw my iPad again, I need to control my rage)

That was pretty much the entirety of book 2. Oh yeah…. and they finally get married.

The Sweetest Game: Book 3: This book was actually kind of okay. I didn’t love it, I didn’t hate it. The good thing was I didn’t want to throw my iPad across the room at any point, so that’s clearly an improvement.

Jack and Cassie finally get their happily ever after, and that’s pretty much it. That’s the entire book.

One thing I liked about the book was Dean and Melissa’s relationship. Throughout the entire series you never knew what was going on with them, but you knew you wanted them to end up together. You get more of their story in this book.

My favorite part of the entire book was the epilogue. SPOILER……… It was written in their son Chances POV and I REALLY wish they could just start off the series again with him, because I loved Chance in the 10 or so pages he was in.

The Other Game: Book 4: So this was pretty much The Perfect Game but from Dean’s point of view. I loved Dean and I was hoping it would encompass some of his relationship from book 3 with Melissa, but alas it didn’t and that was really disappointing.

The entire book plays through the cheating crap, which pissed me off again…… BUT I was even MORE pissed off, because Jack told Dean and Dean had to keep his secret and you knew it was eating Dean up inside to know about it. ALSO Jack was NEVER going to tell Cassie he cheated if Krystal never showed up, which REALLY pissed me off more!

There’s not much else to the book. The only funny scene was when Dean and Melissa go to Alabama to help Jack pack his house up. They run into Krystal at the bar and Melissa goes off on her and that was entertaining.

The series as a whole:

Pretty much what I took away from this book… I HATE Jack Carter and his cheating lying ass! Who the hell would want a character like that as their lead male romantic interest? I would rather have had Cassie cut his balls off, tell him to F%@$ off and go find another guy.

Also I found out that I am never reading another romance novel that involves either of the lead characters cheating because it will piss me off to no end and I will want to throw my iPad across the room……. and I’ve become very attached to my iPad……. so I don’t want to do that. In my book cheating is the #1 no no in a relationship. There’s no coming back from that for me.

SO if you made it this far, Thanks for reading my crazy rant of craziness and I hope it entertained you 😉 It definitely made me feel better.

My Rating: 2 pissed off iPad throwing stars! *RAWR*
